We don’t get asked to restore vintage prams that much, and precisely because of that, we couldn’t resist taking it on. This one pre-dates the classic Silver Cross prams but is much of the same style. The wooden pram body had been home to a rats nest whilst kept in the owner’s barn for a number of years (full Hazmat attire required!) and exhibited some bodywork damage as a result. One week in May. I thought this stool seat frame was unusually heavy for its size! No fewer that 15 papers of various titles from the Daily Express and News of the World to the Evening Standard from 9-16 May 1953, the month before Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, were enclosed within! A change is as good as a rest they say so it was refreshing to leave the upholstery aside for a couple of days and get to work on this card table that had met with an accident (client unfolded it without the supporting legs in place!). So, one side mount scissor hinge that snapped was brazed (rather than replaced for originality), numerous woodwork restoration elements following the ‘rapid unscheduled disassembly’!, veneers where needed, table top splits dealt with, French polished, and new baize fitted. Some CPD for me this week. 2 x deep buttoned wingback armchairs re-covered in vinyl which, in all honesty, was like trying to giftwrap a kangaroo in cardboard, and made all the more interesting by the need to first tailor then machine the back to the wings to the arms as an entire assembly before fitment.
